Family Nutrition Nights (PDF)
Family Nutrition Nights: Looking at Nutrition through Core Content is an
instructional resource for educators seeking to hold Family Nutrition Nights (FNN)
for grades K-4 and 5-8. The lessons are designed to help students and their parents
develop positive attitudes toward good nutritional practices, to establish lifelong
healthful eating patterns, to take action for good health, and to provide accurate
and current nutrition information. Each activity includes an activity plan, lab
instructions, and key concepts. Some activities include extra materials such as
charts or student activity sheets. The activity plan identifies grade level expectations
(GLE) for math, science, and English/language arts and benchmarks for health..
Louisiana Action for Healthy Kids
Team Nutrition is a partner in Action for Healthy Kids at the federal and state levels. Both initiatives promote healthful eating and physical activity habits among youth. This webpage was designed to serve as a clearinghouse of ideas for teachers, school personnel, parents, and students to promote a healthful environment. Visit Power Panther's Calorie Challenge at this site.
Louisiana School Health Index
This program is designed to serve as a tool to help your school assess its physical activity and nutrition policies and programs based upon national nutrition standards and guidelines. This Web site can be used as a reference to develop your School Improvement Plan. As an added bonus, this Web site provides rationales for each question on the score cards based upon the 2000 U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
Adult Emerging Readers
This site was created to help parents who are emerging readers or who speak English as a second language to learn more about nutrition. Health education is more effective if students receive consistent messages throughout the school and at home. For more information on involving parents in physical and nutrition education for their children, refer to Module 8: Family and Community Involvement in the Louisiana School Health Index.
Nutrition Across the Curriculum
An instructional resource for educators at all grade levels. Lessons are designed to help students develop positive attitudes toward good nutritional practices, establish lifelong healthful eating patterns, take action for good health, and provide accurate and current nutrition information.
Jazzy Food and Nutrition Bulletin Board Ideas
Bulletin boards can be major teaching assets in your classroom or cafeteria. Creating exciting bulletin boards can brighten up your entire classroom or cafeteria, stimulating students, and calling attention to topics you want to highlight. Bulletin boards can help reinforce the goal of promoting healthful food choices by students.
Learning Cafe (PDF)
The cafeteria-related activities and ideas in this book were developed for the cafeteria manager to conduct alone or to team with a teacher to enhance concepts taught in class. The activities and ideas have been compiled to act as a springboard for the manager’s own creativity and to encourage active involvement in effective cafeteria learning experiences.
