Louisiana is focused on improving graduation rates and reducing dropout rates. Currently, about 10,000 students in grades 7-12 drop out of school each year. But since Louisiana has intensified its efforts on improving graduation rates, the dropout rate has declined. Since 2005, the annual dropout rate has dropped by about 45 percent.
In Louisiana, a dropout is defined as a student who is enrolled in public school, but does not re-enroll in a public school the following fall, and is not expelled, does not receive a GED certificate, continue school outside the public school system, or begin college.
Calculation for the dropout rate differs from the Cohort Dropout Rate, which tracks the same group of students over four years and measures the percentage of students within that specified cohort who dropped out and did not return before their expected graduation date.
In order to prevent more students from leaving school, the state has introduced a variety of Dropout Prevention programs to encourage students to complete their high school education and enter college or the workforce.
