Studies have shown early childhood development has a tremendous influence on a child’s chance at academic success, and through the Literacy Goal Office, Louisiana’s Early Childhood Education programs are focused on ensuring our youngest learners enter Kindergarten ready to learn.

Currently, Louisiana serves four-year-olds through three programs: the Cecil J. Picard LA4 Early Childhood Program; the 8(g) Student Enhancement Block Grant Program and the Nonpublic Schools Early Childhood Development Program (NSECD). Through these programs, Louisiana is providing educational resources and services to more than 41,000 at-risk preschoolers - an increase in enrollment of about 57 percent since 2000. Local school districts may also implement their own preschool programs through other funding sources.

Parents can enroll their children by contacting the school district in which you wish to enroll your child to get a list of options that are available. Students must be 4-years-old by on or before September 30 of the year in which you wish to enroll your child. Upon registering for preschool, parents should be prepared to bring An official birth certificate (children born in Louisiana will receive a 15-day grace period, while children born outside Louisiana will be given a 30-day grace period to produce a copy of their birth record); a record of immunization; and an official Social Security card. If no Social Security is available, the student shall be assigned a state identification number.

Please contact your school district for a list of preschool options and specific instruction on how to enroll your child.
