LOUISIANA STATE SUPERINTENDENT RETURNS TO THE CLASSROOM TO CELEBRATE FREEDOM WEEK WITH CIVICS LESSONS ON THE CONSTITUTION

July 29, 2025

(BATON ROUGE, LA) – As part of Louisiana’s annual Celebrate Freedom Week, Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley returned to the classroom to lead high school students in discussions on the U.S. Constitution, the branches of government, and the responsibilities of American citizenship.

In visits to Alexandria Senior High and Mandeville High School, Dr. Brumley delivered hands-on civics lessons that emphasized the foundational ideas of American democracy. “The United States was built on an idea that life could be better,” said Dr. Brumley. “This Constitution helped form our republic. You have the opportunity and obligation to make our great country better every single day.”

At Mandeville High, Dr. Brumley was joined by state legislators and local judges for a “living civics” session, where students explored how the principles of the Constitution are applied in modern governance. The event was hosted in partnership with the St. Tammany Parish Public School System, which welcomed the Superintendent’s interactive approach to civic education.

In Rapides Parish, Dr. Brumley engaged students at Alexandria Senior High with a focused lesson on the three branches of government and the importance of an informed electorate. The Superintendent highlighted the vital role students play in shaping the nation’s future by understanding their rights and responsibilities under the Constitution.

About Celebrate Freedom Week

Celebrate Freedom Week is a legislatively mandated observance held annually in Louisiana public schools. Created through Act 370 of the 2022 Regular Legislative Session, the week coincides with Constitution Day and Constitution Week and promotes instruction on topics related to freedom, including the founding principles of the United States and the significance of the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, and Bill of Rights.

Celebrate Freedom Week aligns with Louisiana’s Freedom Framework social studies standards, which emphasize primary source analysis and civic reasoning. The observance helps prepare students to be thoughtful, engaged participants in their communities and our constitutional republic.
