SOCIAL STUDIES STUDENT STANDARDS

“These standards reflect the totality of the events that have made America a truly exceptional nation and serve as a Freedom Framework for our children to learn about how Americans have always strived for liberty. We must, and we shall, teach our students to appreciate the majesty of our country and their obligations as citizens to safeguard America’s founding principles.”
Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley

Louisiana's Freedom Framework Social Studies Student Standards

Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley led the adoption of new K-12 student standards for social studies. Known as the Freedom Framework, these standards tell the story of American exceptionalism as well as our continuous journey towards becoming a more perfect union. Recognized as among the strongest standards in the nation, Louisiana has since advised other states in developing similar standards.

Adopted in 2022, the 2023-2024 school year marked the first year of implementation in Louisiana classrooms. The new standards reflect the totality of events that have made America exceptional. From the signing of the Declaration of Independence, to the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation, to the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, this framework illuminates America’s path to freedom as one of struggle and sacrifice. The new standards also introduce historical content in a more precise, coherent, and chronological manner while ensuring students develop essential skills.
