Statewide committee to support modernization of K–12 physical education standards
BATON ROUGE, La. — The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) has named the committee members who will lead the formal review of the state’s K-12 physical education student standards. The Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) approved the membership of the Physical Education Content Standards Review Committee, a group of teachers, education leaders, and community stakeholders tasked with strengthening the role of physical fitness in promoting lifelong health and student success.
“These committee members bring the passion and expertise we need to ensure Louisiana students gain the knowledge and skills for a successful and physically-fit life,” said Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley.
Modernizing Louisiana’s P.E. Standards
This review is part of Louisiana’s regularly scheduled cycle to update content standards every seven years. The current physical education standards were last reviewed in 2017.
The review will focus on updating the standards to:
- Strengthen the progression of foundational movement skills across grade bands
- Ensure developmentally appropriate motor skills and movement patterns
- Embed expectations that support high-quality instruction for all learners
- Integrate physical fitness outcomes that promote health
The revised standards are expected to be presented to BESE in 2026, with statewide implementation beginning in the 2027–2028 school year.
Committee Member Selection
The committee selection process was designed to ensure broad participation and a strong foundation of physical education expertise. In total, 26 individuals were selected to serve across three groups:
- Steering committee
- K–5 grade-band workgroup
- 6–12 grade-band workgroup
Committee members include educators, school system leaders, higher education faculty, and community members with demonstrated expertise in physical education.
Timeline and Next Steps
Committee meetings will begin in late October 2025 and take place in person at the Claiborne Building in Baton Rouge. All meetings will be open to the public. Following the review and revision process, implementation training will take place during the 2026–2027 school year.
