U.S. SECRETARY OF EDUCATION VISITS LOUISIANA TO HIGHLIGHT CIVICS EDUCATION AND STUDENT LEADERSHIP

January 22, 2026

NEW ORLEANS, LA — U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visited New Orleans as part of the national History Rocks! Trail to Independence tour, a U.S. Department of Education initiative celebrating America’s upcoming 250th birthday by spotlighting civics education and student engagement. The tour aims to strengthen civic literacy by helping students personally connect with America’s founding principles.

The day began at Sophie B. Wright Charter School, where Secretary McMahon was joined by Governor Jeff Landry, Louisiana State Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley, members of the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, and Charter Director Dr. Sharon Clark. Students from Sophie B. Wright and across New Orleans public schools participated in a high-energy assembly that included a civics-themed game show, student activities, and remarks from state and federal leaders.

“Louisiana has played a defining role in our nation’s story, beginning with the Louisiana Purchase and continuing through the civic traditions that shape the state today,” said Secretary McMahon. "When I visit a new state on the History Rocks! Tour, I remind students that every time they master a new subject, learn a new historical fact, or help a classmate solve a tough problem, they share in the same spirit that pushed our predecessors to build a stronger nation. I appreciate the warm welcome in Louisiana as we celebrate 250 years of the greatest country on earth.”

Following the school visit, the day continued at The National WWII Museum for a louisiana civics showcase celebrating student leadership, patriotism, and the state’s nationally recognized efforts to elevate civics instruction. The program featured remarks from Secretary McMahon, Dr. Brumley, Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser, LDOE leadership, as well as performances and recognitions of students for civic achievement.
