About the Louisiana Department of Education
The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) provides guidance and support to all publicly funded early childhood centers and elementary and secondary schools in Louisiana. Specifically, the department provides tools and resources to schools and school systems to support classroom instruction, assessments, workforce development and college and career preparation. Additionally, the department provides families and the public with transparent reporting of center, school, and school system performance and quality through the Louisiana School Finder.

The LDOE is the administrative arm of the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE). BESE was established by the 1974 Louisiana Constitution. The Board is composed of 11 members: eight elected by the citizens of Louisiana’s eight BESE districts, and three appointed by the governor of Louisiana to represent the state at-large. NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Louisiana’s largest professional development event for educators opened yesterday for its tenth anniversary at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. Taking place May 31 through June 2, 2022, Teacher Leader Summit brings together educators from across the state for an energy-filled, inspiring event that closes out one school year and inspires attendees in their planning for the next.
The Louisiana Department of Education planned the Summit around four main goals:
- Improve the everyday practice of educators by building their knowledge and skills in key areas related to their role.
- Provide opportunities for educators to collaborate and share best practices.
- Introduce high-quality strategies, resources, and professional development aligned to the state’s priorities that can be adopted and scaled in schools and school systems across Louisiana.
- Foster a culture that celebrates and engages educators and inspires them to take on an even greater leadership role within their classrooms, schools, and school systems.
“We are excited to bring together Teacher Leaders from across the state to improve their craft,” said Em Cooper, Deputy Assistant Superintendent. “This high-quality experience provides educators the tools and knowledge they need to kick off next school year focused on what matters and what works for improving outcomes for kids.”
5,500 Louisiana educators from every corner of the state are participating in this year’s event, which includes over 500 sessions. The theme of the tenth annual Teacher Leader Summit is Making a Comeback, a reference to the resiliency educators have demonstrated over the past several years and how Louisiana continues to make significant academic strides in the face of immense adversity.
