Louisiana students have achieved some of the most significant academic progress in the nation, according to data released today as part of The Nation’s Report Card. Widely regarded as the gold standard of assessments, these latest results measure math and reading proficiency among 4th and 8th grade students in the U.S. Louisiana’s students earned the state’s highest national rankings across both grade levels and subjects.

The Louisiana Department of Education has unveiled new resources to support the public in understanding and accessing the state’s first education scholarship account (ESA) program. The Louisiana Giving All True Opportunity to Rise (LA GATOR) Scholarship Program is set to open student applications by March 1 for the 2025-2026 school year.

The LDOE’s new website features a new look, new audience pages dedicated to some of the site’s most frequent visitors, and new ways for users to find the resources they need. Redesigned with the user in mind, the site offers a more seamless and convenient experience for visitors.

Emily Nevils of Winnfield and Neal Tandon of Kenner were selected from among the state’s top student leaders to be part of the 104 national student delegation that will attend meetings and briefings with senators, the president, a justice of the Supreme Court, leaders of cabinet agencies, and other officials throughout the week. Each delegate will also receive a $10,000 college scholarship for undergraduate study.

The LDOE and BESE recognize outstanding fifth, eighth, and twelfth-grade students who have demonstrated excellence in leadership, academic performance, achievements, citizenship, and service to the school and community through the Students of the Year program.

Today, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed an executive order declaring a period of mourning for the victims of the heinous terrorist attack in New Orleans. In a letter to school system leaders requesting their observance of Governor Landry's order, Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley also asked school systems to consider a system-wide moment of silence at 9 a.m. on Monday, January 6.

Louisiana K-3 students improved their reading proficiency by 2.3 percentage points on a literacy screener given at the beginning of this school year. Student cohort data also showed a 9.3 percentage point increase, with 2023’s kindergarten class growing by 20.4 points in 2024 as first graders.

The standards review committees application is open until January 27. Louisiana teachers, administrators, school system staff, higher education faculty, parents, and community members are encouraged to apply.
